    Guilin (fr & uk) - 09/05

    ------------

Waiting for the bus that should take us to Chengdu in 20 hours, we visit Guilin's Seven Stars park, a very nice and relaxing place compared to the noisy and animated streets of the city, especially after Yangshuo and Longshen peaceful environments. A fairly miserable zoo with an old panda can be visited there, a camel-shaped rock, nice gardens and beautiful views on the city and its hills (the same as in Yangshuo) are some of its other attractions. Avoid the Guilin noodles though, even though watching old Chinese tourists refill their tea-bottle with hot water is a nice to do.

Followed a nice stroll to the palace, along a really busy commercial street (the Chinese are transforming all their towns into Hong-Kong like places, full of commercial centers and shopping areas), unto a lake where two pagodas remind us that the Chinese once had some taste in architecture. All this in the company of Li (they're all named Li I believe), a charming local who wants to practice her english.

The 24 hours (we got a 4 hours extension) bus drive was very very very long, and the low-quality TV series poorly imitating Crouching tiger hidden dragon did not distract us much. Neither did the karaoke. Anyway, congrats to the drivers since the road was fairly bad and scary, and we're just happy to be alive.
